Tuesday, May 20th, 2014 11:17:28 by Shakira SubhaniA jury of eight men and four women said the Muslim cleric Abu Hamza Al Masri guilty of terrorism in the ongoing trial against him four weeks ago in New York. Blind in one eye and no forearms as a result of handling explosives in Pakistan, former imam of Finsbury Park Mosque (London) was accused of involvement in the kidnapping of 16 tourists, including two Americans, in Yemen; of trying to create a jihadi training camp in the U.S.; and “promote violent jihad” in Afghanistan.
According to cleric lawyers, his client never participated in any conspiracy and has been the victim of inflammatory language that characterized his speeches at the London mosque and be a key figure known as Londonistan, name given to the Muslim networks that emerged in the capital British in the late nineties. Abu Hamza was charged with terrorism in 2004 in the United States by his real name, Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, in 2012 and extradited from the UK. Abu Hamza, who referred to the late al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden as a “hero”, unsuccessfully tried to prevent his extradition from the United Kingdom.
In the closing argument for the prosecution, the prosecutor said that Abu Hamza never let slip any opportunity to support jihad anywhere in the globe, from Afghanistan to Yemen or USA.
The defendant could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
