The final decision will be announced on May 28, 2014, however, the suspension of the license is effective with immediate effect.
PEMRA formed a special committee to review the application submitted by the Pakistan Ministry of Defense to ban the Geo TV network in Pakistan after allegations against the head of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) for involvement in the assassination attempt on well known reporter and anchor person Hamid Mir.
Three member committee included Syed Ismail Shah, Pervez Rathore and Israr Abbasi.
Committee members told reporters on Tuesday May 20, 2014 that they all have unanimously decided to suspend the licenses of the thee tv Geo News, Geo Entertainment and Geo Tez with effect from today.
The Committee will hold an other session on May 28, 2014 to finalize the decision to cancel the licenses.
However a spokesman for PEMRA has said in a statement that today’s meeting did not meet the legal requirements of the PEMRA rules which requires at least half of the members attending the meeting.
Mian Shamsur Rehman, a member of PEMRA committee said in a statement, “All members (present) today unanimously decided that the licence for Geo News be cancelled.”
“However, due to a legal formality that could not be completed, we have sent our recommendations to the Council of Complaints, advising that they respond before May 28, the date for our next meeting,” Mian Shamsur Rehman further added.
