Egyptian court sentences Mubarak to 3 years in prison

An Egyptian court has convicted Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday to three years in prison for stealing and embezzling public funds of $ 14.3 million. His sons Alaa and Gamal Mubarak will spend four years in jail for the same reasons. The statement comes on the eve of the country confronts a new process that will mark its future, as the Egyptians are called to the polls to elect a new president on 26 and 27 May.

Three and a half years after the fall of the dictator, his shadow still planning in the Arab country. The official, who clung to power for 30 years, has been indicted in several cases since then. However, in August last year, months after the military coup against Islamist Mohamed Morsi, another judge ordered him out of the penalty for exceeding the two years of preventive detention which sets a limit in Egyptian law.

Since then, thanks to an extraordinary measure approved by the presidency, Mubarak lives under house arrest in the military hospital of Cairo neighborhood of Maadi, due to his poor health. There is still waiting for a new sentence for his alleged involvement in the death of nearly a thousand demonstrators during the revolution of January 2011, which already earned him a revoked after – or life imprisonment for selling gas to Israel below of market prices.

His sons Alaa and Gamal, his father tried to position it in the line of succession.  The dictator is accused, along with their offspring, having used a clique of businessmen friends to reshape its many mansions and palaces with public money for decades. The Egyptian corruption cost the public purse more than 10 million euros. The defendants will have to repay the money, plus a fine of just over two million.

With ousted Mohamed Morsi also parading the bench every week and following sentences constant members of the Muslim Brotherhood, surprises conviction against Mubarak clan to five days before the election. The former dictator himself said weeks ago through his lawyer that supports Abdel Fatah al Sisi to become next president of Egypt. A process that must be ratified at the polls, but that is taken for granted to the weak leftist opposition candidate Hamdin Sabahi.
