Former Thai prime minister detained by Army after Coup
Saturday, May 24th, 2014 7:20:09 by Nadeem BajwaThe former Prime Minister of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra, appeared Friday in a military base in Bangkok to meet the military junta after army took control of the country through a coup on Thursday. The former prime minister was then detained. Shinawatra was ousted two weeks ago by the Thai courts. The Thai army has banned the departure of 155 citizens found among politicians and activists, as reported by state television on Friday, taken yesterday by the coup.
After the televised announcement of the coup, the military junta announced several control measures such as curfews nationwide between 22.00 and 5.00, banning gatherings of more than five people and the suspension of broadcast radio and television.
Army chief, General Prayuth Chan-ocha said, “We must have economic, social and political reforms before elections. If the situation is peaceful, we are ready to return power to the people.”
There has been 32 army interventions in the Thailand politics since 1932. United States Secretary of State John Kerry said on Thursday there was no justification for a coup. He warned that military coup will have negative implications for Thailand ties with its ally.
