Flemish nationalists try to form government in Belgium
Thursday, May 29th, 2014 8:54:57 by Maleeha TareenKing Philippe of Belgium to be avoided by all means as an institutional paralysis that kept the country 541 days without a government four years ago. To accelerate some complex procedures that are anticipated, the monarch has already ordered the leader of the Flemish nationalist party, Bart de Wever, to enter into discussions to form an Executive. Its formation, the N -VA, was voted in the general elections held last Sunday in Belgium, with 20% of the total vote.
De Wever will have a hard time to seek alliances to replace the hitherto Socialist Prime Minister Elio di Rupo. Its independence ideology led him to defend controversial ideas such as eliminating the figure of the Prime Minister of Belgium and break the box only Social Security. As mayor of Antwerp, the economic heart of the country, has promoted populist anti-immigration policies and that have earned the distrust of almost all formations. In 2010 De Wever was unable to agree with the rest, despite having also been the voted leader.
The appointment of the Flemish nationalist, announced Tuesday by the Royal Family, is more of a formality than a clear mandate to govern. “In Belgium, tradition dictates that after the elections, the king appoints a person to meet with top political leaders. The role is now reporting not of forming government. That is a successive stage, “explains Francis Delpérée, professor of constitutional law and elected member of the Francophone center Democrats in Parliament in Brussels.
The president of the N -VA must therefore explore possible partnerships, which include his party and not, and present their findings to the king on 3 June. ” I see two scenarios: a government with the N- VA at all levels, which is what I want and I know who to talk to. Either scenario I think he wants the Socialist Party: The classic tripartite ” De Wever moved following his appointment.
That flamenco called classic tripartite leader is actually a government six formations as there has been in the last term: Socialists, Liberals and Christian Democrats, the Flemish equivalent duplicate and Walloon. With election results in hand, the reissue of this model would be feasible since added almost the same seats in the previous legislature. The parties currently refuse to rule on their preferences, but on the campaign trail have made clear their little sympathy for the Flemish nationalists.
