Government Opposes Removal of Musharraf’s Name from ECL
Thursday, May 29th, 2014 8:21:51 by Khalil KhanSindh High Court has reserved the decision on the petition filed by former president of Pakistan, (Rtd) General Pervez Musharraf to remove his name from the Exit Control List so that he can travel abroad for medical treatment of his fractured spine. Musharraf’s lawyer and Attorney General of Pakistan closed their arguments on the case this Thursday May 29, 2014.
Barrister Farogh Naseem who was representing Pervez Musharraf argued that his client’s name be removed from the Exit Control List as he was suffering from fracture of backbone and need medical treat which is not available in Pakistan.
Barrister Naseem further argued that his client is not charged with treason and case involves only the suspension of the Pakistan constitution.
Attorney General of Pakistan, Salman Aslam But said in the court, “His chances to return in Pakistan are too low. Hussain Haqqani left Pakistan and despite summon by the court, he did not return”.
But told reporters that Musharraf will not return if he is allowed to leave the country. He insisted that charges against Musharraf included treason and Sindh High Court does not have jurisdiction to hear the petition.
A two-judge bench of the Sindh High Court hearing the petition was headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar. Justice Shahnawaz Tariq is the other member of the bench. The decision will be announced on May 31, 2014.
