Friday, May 30th, 2014 8:06:19 by Khalil KhanThe EU executive has today rejected the proposed citizens’ legislative initiative that called for the protection of human beings from conception to Brussels demanding to stop funding research involving the destruction of embryos and to cease development assistance programs in which abortion is supported. The initiators ‘One of Us’ had collected two million signatures in the 28 member states.
“The Twenty Eight and the European Parliament have agreed to continue funding for research in this area; embryonic stem cells are unique and offer a high potential for saving lives, “said EU research commissioner Marie Geoghegan-Quinn. In the text, the European Commission stresses that national governments and EU institutions have adopted a common policy recently and defends the current financial framework. Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs underlines that European programs in third world countries plan to expand access to services of “effective” family planning so that abortions “are unnecessary.”
The EU has stated that the activities of EU-funded research have to do with the treatment of diseases like Parkinson’s or diabetes. Between 2008 and 2012, Brussels initiatives funded reproductive health and family planning worth 104 million euros, while between 2007 and 2013 a total of 157 million in 27 projects in stem cell research was distributed. All of them qualifies, met the national legislation of the country in which they occur and pass an “ethical consideration” before jump-start, said a spokesman for the EU executive. “In addition, there has been no policy change ” affects.
Proponents of One of Us, have issued a highly critical statement with the European ‘veto’. “The response of the Commission is hypocritical and supercilious; the EU wants to continue funding biotechnological practices that are unethical and are obsolete and abortion in developing countries, including those in which it is prohibited. “For his part, Secretary of the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development, Neil Datta, welcomes the decision of the EU executive on a co-signed by a bunch of organizations in favor of reproductive rights statement. “The initiative could have had catastrophic consequences for maternal and global health in the poorest countries consequences,” he concludes.
