French police evicted hundreds of immigrants in Calais
Friday, May 30th, 2014 8:25:09 by Shakira SubhaniFrench police have evicted on Wednesday three camps that housed hundreds of immigrants in the port city of Calais in northern France, an eviction that comes days after the far-right National Front formation was the most voted party in elections to European Parliament in the neighboring country.
The evictions, which have been denounced by organizations defending human rights, had been announced a week ago by the local authorities, arguing that the camps were a threat to public health and safety in the area.
Calais has attracted in the last four years hundreds of migrants fleeing poverty in countries in conflict such as Afghanistan and Iraq, many of them hoping to cross the strait by ferry or train to get to UK.
“It is sad and nothing changes “, said Jalal, an Iraqi about 20 years old as he watched the police entered the camp for their eviction. ” I’ll bring my store to another place… but I stay here. What else can I do? Try to do over again. Did not come here to leave,” he explained.
Many of the 600 to 800 immigrants living in the three camps and had left there before the eviction ordered by the prefect of the region of Pas de Calais, Denis Robin was announced.
Pas de Calais is located in the northeast of France, where the National Front has achieved 34% of the vote in the European Parliament elections held in the neighboring country last Sunday.
Training leading Marine Le Pen has campaigned in favor of a drastic reduction in immigration and expressed their rejection to the European Schengen area without borders, allowing free movement of EU citizens between the countries of the European Union.
