Monday, June 2nd, 2014 11:55:30 by Shakira SubhaniQatar may lose the right to host the FIFA football world cup 2022 after the allegations suggesting payments of £3m to a number of football officials as reported by the Sunday Times. FIFA investigator Michael Garcia, a United States lawyer, has met the members of the Qatar officials to finalize the report which he plans to submit by June 9, 2014. Australia, South Korea, Japan and the United States were defeated by Qatar to win the right to host the FIFA world cup 2022.
Qatar football officials have denied any wrongdoing in the bidding process. The Sunday Times claims to have obtained millions of documents indicating the involvement of Muhammad Bin Hammam, a former FIFA official, on behalf of Qatar bidding committee. The documents show that Bin Hammam paid £3m to a number of governing football organizations to secure the vote in favor of Qatar.
Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Asian Football Confederation president, said in a statement that he is concerned about the corruption reports but he added that Qatar committee would do their utmost to clear the doubt.
Michael Garcia said in a statement, “The report will consider all evidence potentially related to the bidding process, including evidence collected from prior investigations.”
Greg Dyke, the chairman of the Football Association has called for Qatar to be stripped of the World Cup if it is proven that the Gulf state’s top football official paid millions of pounds to African counterparts in the run up to the vote.
