Violence Erupted in Karachi After News of Altaf Hussain’s Arrest

Violence have erupted in the Pakistani city of Karachi after the news of arrest of MQM leader Altaf Hussain in London, the United Kingdom. At least 8 vehicles were torched by the protesters. Long traffic jams on the city roads are creating chaos among the masses. Though MQM is condemning the violent protest and asking the workers to remain calm, but people have not spared a single moment to use the occasion to spark lawlessness in the city.

Altaf Hussain, Muthidah Quami Movement (MQM) leader, has been detained by London Metropolitan police according to media reports. However, London police has not confirmed the name of the 60 year old British national of Pakistan origin from a residential property in the North West London area. The name of the detained person has not been confirmed by the London Police. However, the media reports suggest that arrested person is MQM chief Altaf Hussain. Police had earlier recovered £250,000 from the same property.

The situation is Karachi and Hyderabad is tense after the reports of MQM leader’s arrest. Businesses in the two cities have been shut down and unrest in various parts of the cities have been reported.

MQM has denied the arrest of Altaf Hussain and said that he is at home. MQM Senior Deputy Convenor Nadeem Nusrat, in a press briefing, has confirmed that “in the early hours today, the Metropolitan Police arrived at the residence of Mr Altaf Hussain in North London”. Nusrat further added, “They had the search warrant and said that they want to arrest Mr Hussain and take him to the police station where he will be questioned about money laundering investigation”. He also appealed to the people to control their sentiments and maintain peace at all cost.
