World’s Oldest Pants Found in a Chinese Tomb
Wednesday, June 4th, 2014 10:11:58 by Shakira SubhaniAn international team of archaeologists has made a stunning discovery of the oldest garment in the world. The garment was dated about 3,000 years ago and is very similar to those of today. The finding was released in a recent excavations in the Tarim Basin Yanghai grave in western China.
” They look similar to present day garments, both in form and fashion”, the authors of the discovery, Ulrike Beck and Mayke Wagner, who also pointed out that it is unusual that such antique fabrics survive without disintegrating, so I do not know if be possible to make a similar finding in other parts of the world. The researchers explained that the hot, dry summer weather helped preserve human bodies, clothing and other organic materials in the Tarim Basin. More than 500 tombs have been excavated there since early 1970.
As noted by Science News, this garment had belonged to nomadic pastoralists of Central Asia. All data also indicate that these have been the inventors of the garment, allowing them greater freedom of movement when riding horses, and therefore an advantage in the war against other riders.
The two shepherds found in the tomb with the pants were about 40 years old when they died and were buried with various objects of leather and metal, a sign that they were warriors.
At work, which has also been published in Quaternary International, explains that the pants are sewn from three pieces of brown wool, one for each leg and one for the crotch. The final design includes side openings, retaining chains at the waist and decorative motifs. Researchers can not say whether the invention spread to the world from there or came in various places and times independently.
