Russia agrees to a temporary solution to the ‘gas war ‘

Europe moves away from the scene of interruptions in the supply of Russian gas this summer. Russia and Ukraine agreed on Monday a joint framework to settle the debts of millions and set a price for future deliveries. The European Commissioner for Energy, Günther Oettinger, called the pact to guarantee deliveries unchanged at least a year. The heads of Gazprom, the Russian energy giant, and Naftogaz, the Ukrainian company, accepted the idea, but still must be endorsed by the authorities of their respective countries, Oettinger said after the meeting.
The atmosphere of the trilateral meeting indicated that something had changed since the last meeting. The key was the confirmation from Gazprom that had been paid 578 million euros that Ukraine had made on Friday. That amount covers just over a third of the debt recognized by all, some 1,600 million, but falls far short of what Moscow calls, more than 2,500 million. Thereafter, the parties negotiated for nearly six hours, giving the fruit a barely basting agreement. Unlike in previous appointments, where each party offered his version of events, the Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak and his Ukrainian counterpart Yuri Prodan, agreed that it was the European Commissioner who communicate the results to the press.
“My goal is that the price is agreed for future deliveries to continue until June 2015, so as to ensure security of supply one year and can be stored. The important thing also is that while these proposals are studied, there is no interruption in energy supply, “said Oettinger. The threat to close the gas tap to the European Union kept in suspense, for one third of its gas comes from Russia and Ukraine circulating half. The parties will meet again soon to work out the details.
