MQM Leader Moved Back to Police Station from Hospital
Friday, June 6th, 2014 8:22:53 by Nadeem BajwaMutthadiah Quami Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain has been moved to Southwark police station after doctors in a private hospital cleared him. Altaf Hussain was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a money laundering case. Various medical tests including angiography were conducted during the past two days.
London Metropolitan Police said in a statement that the 60-year-old man arrested on Tuesday, 3 June in connection with a money laundering investigation has now been returned to a police station from hospital.
Pakistan has offered to provide legal support to MQM leader. Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson told reporters that Altaf Hussain has not requested for legal support. Spokesperson also announced that Pakistani Passport and National Identity Card for Pakistani Origins will be issued to him after completing the necessary procedures. The spokesperson also said that Altaf Hussain has thanked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Meanwhile MQM continue to protest in Karachi. MQM workers and leaders prayed for recovery of their party chief. MQM is holding a Youm-i-Dua on Friday to make prays for Altaf Hussain’s health.
Police can detain Altaf Hussain for question up to 72 hours; however, the time spent in hospital does not count toward 72 hours detention rules.
Altaf Hussain was allowed counsellor access on request of Pakistan government and acting Pakistani High Commissioner, Imran Mirza, visited the MQM leader in hospital on Thursday.
Altaf Hussain also talked to his party leaders on phone and asked them to avoid taking law in hands and only stage peaceful protests. After party leader advice, situation in Karachi returned to normal and businesses reopened.
