Karachi International Airport Reopens for Flight Operations
Monday, June 9th, 2014 7:11:54 by Nadeem BajwaDirector General ISPR Major Gen. Asim Bajwa said that Karachi Jinnah International airport has been clreared and handed over to Civil Aviation Authority and Airport Security Forces. The airport is opened for passengers and flight operations.
Pakistan International Airlines flight PK308 departed for Islamabad after the reopening of the Karachi airport.
Karachi airport was closed after the terrorist attack on Sunday night. 10 terrorists entered airport and started firing using sophisticated weapons. Pakistan Army was called and all terrorists were killed after about five hours of firing.
The report submitted by security forces to the Prime Minister of Pakistan indicates that terrorists wanted to destroy the planes on the airport, however, they failed in their attempt. Prime Minister praised the security forces, however, he raised concerned on the insufficient security measures at the airport that allowed the terrorists to enter the airport without any resistance.
Former interior minister Rehman Malik has called the attack on Karachi airport as the 9/11 of Pakistan.
The terrorist attack resulted in 29 deaths including 10 terrorists, 8 airport security forces officers, two police officers, one Ranger and 8 civilians. 26 people sustained injuries during the attack.
