Prime Minister Thaci won parliamentary elections in Kosovo
Tuesday, June 10th, 2014 3:25:43 by Maleeha TareenOfficial results of parliamentary elections on Sunday in Kosovo confirm the victory of the Democratic Party (KDP) led by outgoing Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. After proclaiming the victory of the PDK, which was introduced in the campaign with the slogan ‘New Mission’, Thaci said his party “will work even harder to ensure (Kosovo) is integrated into NATO and the European Union.”
According to the Central Electoral Commission, after scrutiny of 94.23 % of the vote, the PDK has obtained 31.21 % of the votes, against the opposition Democratic League (LDK), with 26.13%. Third Albanian Self-determination nationalist formation, with 13.73%, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) of former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj is positioned at fourth, with 9.65% of votes. No party has a majority to govern alone, so that the Executive should be formed by a coalition.
Low participation of 42.17 % in the second parliamentary elections since Kosovo unilaterally proclaimed independence from Serbia in 2008 and has been recognized by more than one hundred countries, including the U.S. and most EU states were recorded.
Elections were held with some minor irregularities, observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
“Major incidents or irregularities were not reported. This is an achievement of both the Central Electoral Commission and the voters,” the head of the OSCE mission in Kosovo, Jean -Claude Schlumberger said.
The Serbs have ten seats guaranteed by the Constitution. The law guarantees ten seats to other minority communities in Kosovo, populated by a large Albanian majority country.
The international community urged the authorities in Pristina that the elections were fair and be held in a democratic environment, following a complaint from serious manipulations in the elections of 2010.
Thaci said last night that “all citizens of Kosovo, all political parties have sent the best message to the world that democracy works in Kosovo.”
The main issues of the campaign were short measures to promote economic growth and create new jobs in a country with an official unemployment of 35%, the fight against corruption and crime.
