End of the ‘ghost goal’ in Football World Cup 2014
Wednesday, June 11th, 2014 8:58:34 by Maleeha TareenThe knockout clash between Germany and England in the last World Cup (4-1) went down in history as a humiliation due to a wrongly disallowed goal of England’s Frank Lampard when the score was just 2-1. The glaring error led FIFA to definitely rethink the thorny issue of ‘ghost goal ‘ and adopt Goal Line Technology (GLT), a system of 14 cameras (7 per goal) that will be used for the first time in a World Cup from Brazil – Croatia on Thursday.
“What matters is not the number of incidents, but the potential impact of a single incident in the competition,” said Johannes Holzmuller, who heads a FIFA program that helped implement the technology. The cost has not been revealed by FIFA and it will be used in the 12 World Cup stadiums.
It is known that the World Cup will move hundreds of millions of euros in bets, whose fate may depend on a bad goal nullified or not allowed.
The systems, which are verified by independent agencies before receiving a FIFA license, are also reviewed by the referee before each game: the referee may decide not to use the system if they see any abnormalities or offers any kind of doubt, warning it both teams.
The teams work offline, so that can not be handled via the Internet by any external agent. Already proven in the last Confederations Cup and England and Holland Competitions, the technology is applied exclusively to the goal line, and only to resolve cases of dubious goals.
The possibility of including in football or plays video to clarify doubtful situations is still under discussion within the International Football Association Board, responsible for possible amendments to the rules of the game, where the resistance comes from fear it could excessively slow the pace of games since automation of certain decisions eliminate the unpredictability the most popular sport in the world.
