Reuven Rivlin

The Knesset, Israel’s parliament, elected on Tuesday as conservative Reuven Rivlin tenth president of the State. The veteran politician belongs to the right wing of the Likud Party, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Rivlin needed a second round of voting to beat Schitrit Meir, the centrist party HatnĂșa of Justice Minister Tzipi Livni. Three other candidates, including two women, were out of the contest in the first round. The July 24, will take over from Reuven Shimon Peres in front of the head of state.

The Labour Peres served since 2007. Centre 90, Peres was one of the oldest national leaders of the world. With it goes the first row of the last Israeli politicians who participated in the wars of the foundation and independence in 1948. Earned the Nobel Peace Prize together with Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in 1994.

The head of state in Israel is a ceremonial office for a term of seven years. Although lacking executive, presidents of countries with volatile parliamentary majorities can become decisive in situations of lawlessness. The president can propose covenants and endorse candidates. Italy is a good example. As in Rome, Jerusalem lawmakers change positions more easily than their colleagues Madrid or Berlin. Beyond this potential influence, which is tight Rivlin reach the national authority or international prestige of his predecessor Peres.

Whenever Rivlin is an advocate of Greater Israel that rejects the two-state solution to resolve the conflict with the Palestinians. This would involve the creation of a Palestinian state with full rights and own administration. The Palestinians claim they always talk about your category of ” observer status ” at the UN, but authorities in the West Bank, occupied by Israel and directed by Gaza – fenced and isolated under a government of Fatah – Hamas and Gaza match – have remained for seven years feuding government, although last week formed a technocratic cabinet unit.

The recent failure of the peace negotiations by the United States driven away the creation of a Palestinian state. More and more voices on the right and the Israeli far right question as the president plans to establish a Palestinian state. Netanyahu says he still aspires to the two-state solution, but for years does not make less progress in the negotiations.

President-elect Rivlin is 74 and was government spokesman Ariel Sharon when he presided at the beginning of the century. He later chaired the Knesset. Your resume pales in comparison to that of Peres, a tireless politician who has held the various positions. In Israel it is said that the very good name of Peres became the presidential campaign in a contested race that more candidates than ever occurred in the 66 year history of Israel. Two of them were out by two scandals, one of sexual harassment and other corruption. Seven years with the Peres rescued by the bad reputation that its predecessor sank Moshe Katsav, who are in jail for rape since 2011.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has interfered in the presidential race to prevent the victory of Rivlin. He even proposed the abolition of the post and also to invite others to come forward. Rivlin had put into question within and outside the party during the last ten years. In May alone the prime minister agreed to support the candidacy of Rivlin. Being a friend of the president may find it very convenient if you run out and it’s parliamentary majority to form a government again.
