A few days after arrival in the U.S. Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who is still recovering in a military hospital in Texas for nearly five years of captivity he suffered in Afghanistan, the Army announced Monday the opening of a formal investigation to establish “the facts and circumstances” surrounding his “disappearance” and capture by the Taliban in June 2009.

The investigation will be headed by a military officer with combat experience in Afghanistan, Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl, informed the Defense Department said in a statement, which also emphasizes that it is a fairly routine procedure.

“The main function of this investigation is to determine the facts, these investigations are not uncommon and serve to clarify the facts on the ground after an incident,” says the official note.

President Barack Obama announced with great fanfare on May 31 release of Bergdahl, the last American prisoner of war in Afghanistan. The joy at the news but quickly became controversial both for the price of his release, he was traded for five Taliban prisoners in Guantanamo – like doubts surrounding his disappearance. Some of his fellow soldiers have openly accused of desertion.

According to U.S. military law, desertion is a crime which provides for the death penalty even if committed in wartime.

The soldier of 28 years, during his five years of captivity was automatically promoted to sergeant, remained nearly two weeks in a U.S. military hospital in Germany before being transferred last Friday, to another medical facility in San Antonio, Texas, where complete recovery.

This remains the “top priority” of the Army, Pentagon points now, which has again asked “respect the time and privacy needed to complete the objectives of the final phase of reintegration ” of the military. Therefore, Brigadier Dahl interrogate Bergdahl not until watching their recovery specialists give the okay, so ” there is no fixed limit to the end of the investigation period.”
