Pakistan-Tajikistan Agree Electricity Deal
Tuesday, June 24th, 2014 3:15:19 by Ahmad MehdiAfter signing a major contract with Tajikistan for importing electricity in order to reduce the energy crises in Pakistan, the two countries have now crossed a major hurdle as they have finally agreed a set price for the electricity which will be supplied.
The project was directly aimed at easing the energy shortages in Pakistan. Tajikistan currently has surplus electricity and they are willing to supply it for financial benefit. United States and World Bank are backing this project and financing it heavily in order to fully execute it.
The energy crisis in Pakistan is disturbing the business and daily routines in the country. Reports suggest that almost 3% of economic growth is being erased every year due to this reason. Taking all this under consideration, the current government has promised the nation that it will cut through the hurdles in order to eradicate this problem. However, they have claimed that this cannot happen before 2018.
While the two parties spoke regarding the tariff which they have decided to set for the supplied electricity, it was set upon 5 cents per unit for the supply.
According to the Tajikistan embassy in Pakistan, Tajikistan after being disconnected from Central Asia’s energy grid has no other option but to sell surplus electricity in summer to South Asian countries.
