The incidents that marred last week in France by historical celebrations after Algeria football team progressed to the knockout stages of the World Cup in Brazil have provided a new opportunity to the leader of the French extreme right to limit nationality. The president of the National Front (FN) Marine Le Pen, has demanded an “end to dual nationality ” and considered that the riots after the football game, where they arrested 74 people, highlight the failure of integration.

“We must put an end to dual nationality. We must choose, be Algerian or French, Moroccan or French, but you can not be both,” Marine Le Pen told Europe 1 radio and the newspaper Le Monde. The incidents  “show the total failure of immigration policy in our country and expressed rejection of a number of binational, assimilation,” she added. “The state has to regain its authority. No country in the world would accept endure what we endure in our territory. “

The Interior Ministry announced for Monday in anticipation to Algeria clash with Germany, the deployment of thousands of police and gendarmes, including fifteen units of special security forces. It has also made available the material for riot police to maintain order, as water cannons and helicopters and equipment to identify potential troublemakers.

In Paris, the municipality has a giant screen installed at the Town Hall Square to broadcast World Cup matches and in principle should display all knockout. But on Friday relented and announced that only will be those of France, thus avoiding having to show Algeria to ten in the evening. Only then will issue which also faces today, at six o’clock, France and Nigeria.

France, where a large community of 700,000 Algerians and one million direct descendants of these lives, according to the Institute of Statistics, which does not account for the Algerians third – generation closely follows the exploits of the North African country, who came to Brazil without having won a single match in a World Cup since 1982. But the celebrations that accompanied the streets in their results have led to incidents across the country, with about thirty arrests in Paris. In the previous two games, the police had also arrested dozens of people.

The association SOS Racisme has reacted to statements by Le Pen considering “dangerous and troubling, build this outrageous story from isolated acts of some fans.” Among politicians, the centrist deputy Yves Jégo has branded the proposal “caricature”. Remove dual citizenship would deprive “5% of the population,” French for “to maintain ties with their country of origin” when most feel “fully” his French citizenship.

Not the first time that Marine Le Pen makes this proposal, which once also defended her father and founder of the National Front, Jean -Marie Le Pen. In 2011, the president of training sent a letter to Members of the National Assembly in this regard. In France, dual nationality has always existed and, although no official statistics, it is estimated that one third of the foreign-born French have it, and 40% in the case of the Maghreb.
