Retired Gen. Xu Caihou, former number two of China’s military hierarchy, was expelled by Communist Party (CCP) on suspicion of corruption and his case is being investigated by the prosecution, according to the Central Committee of the formation ruler through the official Xinhua news agency.

“Investigation found that Xu took advantage of his position to assist in the promotion of some people, and took bribes personally or through family members,” the committee, headed by the president, Xi Jinping said in a statement.

The case ” is serious and has been a vile impact,” the official statement said, which added that the former general and his family obtained large sums in return for other favors, and thus began to be investigated on March 15.

Xinhua announced the expulsion of other former senior party: Li Dongsheng, former Deputy Minister of Public Security, accused of serious violations of law and the disciplinary code; Wang Yongchun, former CEO of the National Oil Corporation China; Jiang Jiemin, former head of the commission of state assets.

The announcement Monday ends months of speculation about Xu, after in March the independent press in Hong Kong revealed that he been detained in a Beijing hospital where he was treated for bladder cancer. Chinese government had refused to confirm all this time.

Xu, whose wife and daughter were arrested in connection with the same case, is the highest ranking military command ever tried for corruption.

For months, analysts shuffled the possibility that if Xu was ” dismissed ” by the communist regime, due to his poor health, but also to the enormous influence of the People’s Liberation Army in Chinese politics.

The former general joined the Central Military Commission organ – leader of the Chinese Armed Forces and third arm of power in the country, along with the Communist Party and the government, in 1999, and was named its vice president in 2004.

Rumors about his fall from grace began circulating a year ago, when formally resigned as number two of the Central Military Commission and no longer appeared, as had been customary in the sessions of the National People’s Assembly (ANP), Legislative Chinese.
