Opposition proposes reduction in government tenure from 5 to 4 years
Tuesday, July 8th, 2014 8:09:17 by Nadeem BajwaOpposition leader in Pakistan National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has suggested the solution for the current crisis in Pakistan is to reduce the the period of government tenure to 4 years instead of existing 5 years while talking to media outside Parliament House in Islamabad this Tuesday July 8, 2014. Shah also said that Constitution is needed to be amended to provide more options for selection of Chief election Commissioner.
Pakistan People Party leader Syed Khurshid Shah said that the government should reduce the period of the National Assembly to reduce conflicts after the expiry of the existing Government. Shah added that once democratic system is stabilized in the country, the tenure can be once again changed to 5 years.
With regard to the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner, the opposition leader said the condition of being a judge for the post has limited the options. If no suitable judge is available for the position then how the Chief Election Commissioner will be appointed.
Syed Khurshid Shah told reporters that amendment in the Pakistan Constitution should be made to include senior bureaucrat or lawyer in the eligibility criteria for head of the Election Commission. He also said that chief should also be authorize to have more powers than the other members of the Election Commission.
