UK will investigate possible cover-up of child abuse in 80s
Wednesday, July 9th, 2014 9:06:51 by Shakira SubhaniThe British Government has announced the launch of two investigations into child sexual abuse in the 80s of the last century and its possible political cover up. The investigation is a result of the accusations last week against former interior minister in times of Margaret Thatcher, Leon Brittan, who once ignored a report that a conservative deputy at the time, Geoffrey Dickens, had sent him about a pedophile ring abuse in Westminster.
The allegations, which had reached the press in the 80s and had been resurfaced in 2012 by the Labour MP Tom Watson, now coincide with the peak of court cases against celebrities for sexual abuse in the past, sometimes several decades. Celebrity Frenzy accused of abuse of minors or adults began to be known in October 2012 that one of the presenters of country’s most popular television, Jimmy Savile, was actually a serial rapist of minors. Although there were suspicions at the time, was never investigated.
The Minister of Interior, Theresa May, announced in the Commons on Monday the creation of an independent committee of experts in law and child protection that will investigate the historical allegations of child abuse.
In parallel, the head of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), Peter Wanless, chair a review of the role played by the police and justice in the investigation of cases of abuses about which they had received information.
For Leon Brittan, who then was the European Commissioner confirmed last week he received a report that had sent him the deputy Dickens and ensures that moved it to his subordinates in the Ministry of Interior to be inform him whether he had to do any follow-up or not. When the case came to light two years ago, the Home Office revealed that 114 had lost documents but concluded that the then Minister Brittan had acted correctly. In parallel, Brittan, now 74, has been accused by a woman of abuses in the 60s before being deputy. Police have questioned him informally but has not come to arrest him.
