The large crater newly opened by a powerful Israeli missile on Zimmo road, a rural area of eastern Gaza, almost overflowing sewage yesterday morning. A squad of technicians pumped the gap of almost 15 meters in diameter with a powerful machine. At the edge of the hole, the director of the municipal water supply in Gaza, Maher Salem, explained the reason for so much effort to fix this seemingly minor wreck in the middle of destruction sown by Israeli warplanes in Gaza: the dirty water came from a drain and it was mixing with domestic water that reaches 150,000 Palestinians. In addition to killing 260 Palestinians, 77% of whom were civilians, 11 days of Israeli bombing has left 300,000 people without water in the strip.

Engineer Salem explained amid the aggression that ” it is normal that the drains are installed in parallel to mains drinking water,” remote and on each side of the roads. This makes it easier to find faults or leaks. Firing a missile in the middle of a rural road, in his opinion, was just to “interrupt the supply” of water to houses. During this offensive, hundreds of thousands of Gazans suffer water restrictions in their homes. Salem explained that due to ” the destruction of two water wells,” disabled by bombings as he cut off the water from the well of Zimmo.

In the Gaza resurrected from 10:00 to 15:00 at the humanitarian truce, the hydraulic engineer Ghassan Qisawi also explained that ” fortunately in this case, most Gazans resort to water sold by private companies.” Otherwise, as the attacks that destroyed the supply Zimmo ” cause massive poisoning ” because the damaged pipes are carrying water for a time and mixed with broken discharging drains. The smelly broth that was formed in the large crater reached tens of thousands of taps in Gaza.

Even in the worst of the offense are the streets of the city a silver tanker trucks that handle private provision. Qisawi owns one of these desalination plants, called Desalination Aamer Maashrow. He says the water quality and competence sell it “okay” although ” not up to the standards of water enjoyed by Israel or Europe.” As his colleague Salem, is convinced the water supply is an Israeli military target, “If you did not know that the pipes underneath, why would an expensive two tons missile to shoot on a rural road? “.

Power cuts worsen water shortages because desalination and pumping stop. Sara Badiei Canadian engineer who works with the Red Cross, explains that water emergencies during wars pose ” a challenge “. Badiei estimated that the five-hour truce ” will not allow even begin to fix” Zimmo shredding.

While Qisawi that had encircled Gaza by Israel “tap water is almost poisonous even in peacetime,” informed a family. With indifferent gesture, said: ‘ The water here has up to 10,000 milligrams of chlorine per liter. ” The recommended maximum is 200 milligrams per liter.  The hardness multiplied by 20 times the considered potable. Gazans are very fond of eating with spices and salt. That make them thirsty. But tap water, hard, oily, hardly worth them to brush their teeth.
