Pentagon will provide Manning treatment for gender change
Saturday, July 19th, 2014 4:45:58 by Jamshed SindhuThe United States (U.S.) Army has decided to provide treatment to sex change soldier Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning, sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking military secrets to WikiLeaks, as reported by a U.S. defense official. The Pentagon has taken this step after the Federal Bureau of Prisons rejected the transfer of uniformed diagnosed with gender dysphoria, from the military prison in Fort Leavenworth (Kansas) to another civil prison and which offers this type of treatment to inmates.
After being rejected the move for the first time, a U.S. military prison will give hormone treatment to one of their prisoners, considering that their sexual identity is that of a woman in a man’s body. The Pentagon is taking this action because Army can not expel Manning while he is serving sentence and therefore must provide the treatment requested by the soldier. The Defense Department argued, when requested the transfer of the prisoner, which has no experience in this type of care.
The day after being sentenced to 35 years in prison, Manning confessed in a letter that he was transsexual and changed its name to Chelsea. The soldier, 26, was sentenced in July 2013 after being convicted of violating the Espionage Act by leaking more than 700,000 classified documents from the State Department to WikiLeaks.
