Obama blames Russian complicity in downing of MH17
Sunday, July 20th, 2014 11:37:15 by Jamshed SindhuPresident Barack Obama increased pressure on his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, for his role in the crisis in Ukraine. U.S. said Russia is an accomplice in crash of a Malaysia Airlines jetliner on Thursday, as the White House suspected that the pro-Russian rebels were responsible.
Obama asked for time to determine the culprit of the attack, in which 298 people died and warned that an international investigation to identify those responsible will be required. It blamed Putin in no time. But he listed a series of clues that point to groups seeking secession of East Ukraine and indirectly involve Putin ‘s Russia.
The missile, said the U.S. president, started from a controlled armed with Russian material pro-Russian region. Russian trains and arms to these rebels, he said. And in recent months these have brought down other planes. Putin is the responsible for encouraging or at least not stopping violence in the region that has led to the slaughter.
“We know that they are heavily armed and trained. And we know that [ this fact ] is not an accident. This occurred with Russian support, “Obama said at a news conference at the White House. “A group of separatists can not shoot down aircraft or, as he says, down fighters without advanced equipment and advanced training, and this comes from Russia.”
Obama urged Putin to stop the flow of weapons and fighters from Russia to Ukraine. ” He has control over the situation and, so far at least, has not exercised.”
The demolition of the Boeing 777, which killed people from 11 nationalities, internationalized the crisis. Putin puts the spotlight of suspicion of the U.S. and the European Union. And the tension triggered by the conflict in Ukraine, which erupted last winter after protests that led to the replacement of the Government of this country and the annexation of the Crimea Ukraine by Russia.
Before the Security Council of the UN in New York, the American ambassador, Samantha Power, presented arguments to their counterparts in the USA. Power said the Malaysian plane flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, “was probably shot down by a surface-to- air missile a Sa -11 operated in a town in the hands of the separatists in Eastern Ukraine.”
“Because of the technical complexity of the SA -11, it is unlikely that the separatists could operate the system without the aid of expert staff,” she added. ” Therefore, we can not rule out Russian Support staff in the use of these systems.”
Obama on Wednesday imposed a new round of sanctions on Russia ‘s role in destabilizing the country of Ukraine, and offered the possibility of relaxing the pressure if Putin removes the support to pro-Russian rebel and accept dialogue with the Government of Ukraine. But he also warned that the U.S. still has room to strengthen sanctions. The president ruled out a military intervention beyond the commitment to defend NATO allies in the region, which do not include Ukraine.
