Supreme Court overturns ruling against Sethi as PCB Chairman
Monday, July 21st, 2014 8:12:23 by Khalil KhanPakistan Supreme Court on Monday July 21, 2014 has overturned the ruling of Islamabad High Court (IHC) against Najam Sethi’s appointment as chairman Pakistan Cricket Board. Two judges bench also asked the PCB to start the process for the election of the new Chairman within seven days. Sethi confirmed that he will not contest for the Chairmen as he has been nominated as the member of management board by patron Nawaz Sharif.
The Supreme Court bench comprising of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the review petition challenging the Islamabad High Court decision to reinstate Zaka Ashraf as PCB Chairman. Supreme Court bench accepted the review petition after hearing arguments from both sides.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court judges also order to appoint the election commissioner within seven days to conduct the elections for chairmanship of the Board.
Najam Sethi talked to the reporters outside the Supreme Court and said, “The PCB petition has been accepted by the Supreme Court which has overruled the IHC’s judgement”.
Sethi further added, “This effectively means that the management committee is in charge of the board again and since I am the head of the committee, I am back as the rightful chief of the PCB.”
“The Prime Minister has nominated two people for the board of governors and I am one of them,” said Sethi. “The Supreme Court has accepted this. I plan to serve on the board of governors alone and have no plans of contesting the elections. I never harbored any such ambitions in the first place.”
Najam Sethi had earlier submitted his resignation in the court. Today’s ruling is expected to end the legal battle of Zaka Ashraf to remain the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board.
