Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014 5:17:03 by Shakira SubhaniPakistan National Assembly Members (MNA) on Monday raised their voice against a proposal that asked abolishing the provision in Constitution of Pakistan that allows drinking of alcohol by non-Muslims. The proposal was tabled by JUI-F MNA Maulana Mohammad Shirani but Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights on Monday July 21, 2014 opposed it stating it will portray bad image of the country.
MNA Mamhood Bashir Virk chaired the meeting of the Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights which was attended by its members and officials from the ministry of Law to discuss the proposal of Maulan Mlhammad Shrani who has asked for banning the alcohol drinking by non-Muslims in Pakistan.
Standing Committee chairman said that government needs to make efforts to control the drinking of alcohol by Muslims. He further said that world consider Pakistan a “conservative nation” and proposed amendment in the law would further create bad image of the country.
Law ministry officials opposed the proposal saying that Constitution of Pakistan does not allow imposing restriction on the drinking of alcohol by non-Muslims. The Constitution only allows drinking of alcohol if it is required by religion in a religious ceremony.
All the member MNA of the Standing Committee opposed banning the alcohol drinking by non-Muslims.
It is encouraging that at least there is one issue of national interest, alcohol drinking by non-Muslims, on which Pakistani law makers are united to protect the rights of the minorities in the country.
