Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014 1:28:45 by Ahmad MehdiThe England captain has decided to hang his international boots after he called a retirement on his career. The Liverpool skipper has played 114 matches for his country and now, at the age of 34, he wants to concentrate on club football.
The English team was led by Steven Gerrard as they stepped into the FIFA World Cup 2014 that was going to take place in Brazil.
England were paired up in the toughest group of the competition, consisting of teams like Uruguay, Italy and Costa Rica. To the surprise of many, England were knocked out of the competition, followed by Italy as Costa Rica topped the group while Uruguay stood second.
England’s second unsuccessful campaign in the World Cup was enough for Steven Gerrard to decide that he needs to call time on his international career.
Now the England star is expected to focus on club football as his team stood second in the Premier League and they will be competing in the UEFA Champions League this year.
The former English skipper said, “This has been a very difficult decision, one of the toughest I´ve had to make in my career. I have agonised over this since coming back from Brazil and have spoken to family, friends and people close to me in the game before coming to this point. I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country and it is a sad day for me knowing that I won´t pull on the England shirt again.”
