25 dead and over 250 injured by explosions of gas in Taiwan
Saturday, August 2nd, 2014 2:49:36 by Jamshed SindhuAt least 25 people, including five firefighters, were killed and 267 injured after a string of explosions in the gas supply system in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, according to Taiwanese emergency services. Strong bursts left shattered streets, uprooted trees and overturned cars. Authorities are investigating the causes of the incident, which occurred around midnight Thursday local time.
The local fire received calls about gas leaks and soon “there was a series of explosions, affecting an area of three square kilometers,” reads a statement from the Ministry of Interior. The Economy Minister Chang Chia-juch, appeared before the press and moved that initial inquiries suggest that the explosions occurred from a propane leak.
The BBC suggests that bursts focused in a district where several petrochemical companies operating pipelines along the sewer system of this port city. The mayor, Chen Chu, appealed for calm and asked the said gas suppliers – CPC state and Hsin Kao Gas – to cut the supply.
