UN forms Commission to probe possible war crimes in Gaza

The commission will investigate the violations of humanitarian and human rights laws according to council’s July 23 resolution. One of the nominated member, Amal Alamuddin, refused to accept the role in the commission.
Baudelaire Ndong Ella, the president of 47 members UN’s top human rights body in Geneva, said in a statement that commission headed by Canada’s William Schabas, and comprising of Doudou Diene of Senegal, and British-Lebanese lawyer Amal Alamuddin is formed to find the violations of the human rights and rule of war in Gaza during the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Amal Alamuddin who is also engaged to George Clooney later declined to accept the responsibility citing existing commitments and heavy work load.
William Schabas is an international law professor at Middlesex University in Canada. Doudou Diene of Senegal is a lawyer who has filled UN posts on racism and human rights in Ivory Coast.
The commission will submit its report in March 2015 to the UN Human Rights Council. The mandate of the commission will be restricted to the resolution of the council passed on July 23 this year.
