32 dead, 9 missing in landslides in Hiroshima

At least 32 people have died and nine others were missing as a result of landslides occurred lands after the “terrible rains” that have been downloaded on the Japanese city of Hiroshima (western Japan, approximately 1.2 million inhabitants). Local authorities have been advised to evacuate roughly 65,000 people about 26,000 households in mountainous areas most affected by rainfall.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the rainfall alert in this mountainous region, where there has been a record amount of 243 mm in the last 24 hours, which has caused flooding and landslides.

“These are some unpublished, terrible rains, and living in a major disaster,” said the prime minister, Shinzo Abe, who has interrupted his holiday to return to the capital, Tokyo, after local authorities asked Army to assist in the rescue. In response to the tragedy, the Ministry of Defence has already risen to 500 members of the Ground Self-Defense Force in the area to assist in the rescue.

Japanese television showed collapsed homes by landslides and mud buried in rubble dumps or flood, flooded streets and cars razed agricultural land.

The high level of casualties and property damage due to the intensity of rainfall combined with the terrain and the type of soft ground in this region, as well as the location of many homes in the foothills of the mountains, the Japanese media reported information.
