Election Commission of Pakistan Suspends 209 Lawmakers
Thursday, October 16th, 2014 2:05:02 by Hunain NaseerThe Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which is responsible for obtaining asset statements from lawmakers, suspended 209 lawmakers on Wednesday on account of their failure to submit these details.
The 209 members of the legislature include 40 from the National Assembly, 2 from the Senate, 98 from the Punjab Assembly, 32 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, 27 from Sindh Assembly and 9 members from the Balochistan Assembly.
These lawmakers had not submitted the details of their assets and liabilities to the ECP by the stipulated date. The members belong to different political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pakistan Muslim League-N, Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Some of the prominent names include the likes of Arif Alvi (PTI), Amir Siraj-ul-Haq (JI), Owais Muzaffar (PPP), Peer Saddaruddin Shah Rashidi (PML-F) and Chaudhry Jaffar & Daniyal Aziz (PML-N). Others like Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, Senator Qayyum Soomro, Senator Mohammad Yousuf and Senator Jamal Leghari were also among those suspended.
The Election Commission of Pakistan’s action falls under sub-section (1), section 42-A of the Representation of the People Act 1976, according to which all members of the legislature (Senate, Provincial and National Assemblies) are obligated by law to submit statements regarding their assets and liabilities.
Upon receipt, the Election Comission of Pakistan publishes an official gazette, in which these statements are notified.
