Friday, October 24th, 2014 10:34:36 by Hunain NaseerAccording to reports, an explosion in the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) rally in Quetta yesterday, killed two and injured dozens of people.
Police believe that the bombing was carried out by a suicide bomber, who was targeting the JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. The JUI-F leader however remained unhurt in his bullet-proof vehicle.
Responsibility for the attack has been claimed by the Jundallah militant group, and eye-witnesses claim that the blast took place after the rally, which was held at the Sadiq Shaheed stadium, finished and supporters were leaving.
According to the police, the bomber tried to climb on top of Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s car, but was stopped by workers and blew himself up later.
“The bomber blew himself up when he failed to climb the vehicle and was stopped by JUI workers,” shared the Inspector General of police.
The IG also stated that the bomber was unable to enter the premises of the stadium due to security measures and instead attacked when the rally was over.
The bomb disposal squad has estimated that about 6 to 8 KGs of explosive material was used in the bomb, which killed two JUI-F workers and injured around 30.
