PAT Rejects Government’s Task Force to Investigate Model Town Tragedy
Friday, November 14th, 2014 6:00:22 by Hunain NaseerPakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT), has rejected the five-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed by Punjab government to investigate the Model Town incident in Lahore earlier this year.
According to reports, the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Quetta, Abdul Razzaq Cheema is going to be heading the JIT, which will also include officials from the Intelligence Bureau, Inter-Services Intelligence, the Federal Investigation Agency and other officers of the police.
The JIT will be put in charge of investigating the tragedy along with the involvement of people nominated in the case by PAT, including the incumbent Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and others.
Rejecting the JIT, PAT’s president Raheel Abbasi expressed his disappointment with the government’s decision not to consult PAT leadership during the JIT’s formation.
“We informed the government during the negotiation that the head of the JIT should be appointed with our approval,” he said.
He also added that PAT has reservations regarding Abdul Razzaq Cheema’s nomination as the JIT’s head due to his connections with the involved parties. According to Mr. Abbasi, the current composition of the JIT is not in the interest of justice and impartiality.
The General Secretary of PAT, Khurram Nawaz Gandapur also expressed disappointment at the lack of government communication, and stated that the government was regularly harassing PAT workers on account of fake cases.
