Musharraf Warns of Pak – India Proxy War in Afghanistan
Tuesday, November 18th, 2014 11:00:41 by Hunain NaseerSpeaking about the drawdown of US and NATO combat forces from the neighbouring Afghanistan, the former COAS and President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf warned of a potential Pakistan-India proxy war.
“The danger for Pakistan is the Indian influence in Afghanistan,” said Musharraf while talking to reporters at his Karachi residence.
He went on to add that India aims to create an anti-Pakistan Afghan state, and is using its influence to achieve this.
“That is another danger for the whole region and for Pakistan because Indian involvement there has an anti-Pakistan connotation. They (India) want to create an anti-Pakistan Afghanistan,” he said.
However, Musharraf also claimed that good ties between Pakistan and India are key to peace and positive development in Afghanistan.
Speaking about the Afghan president’s visit to Islamabad, Musharraf praised the initiative taken by Mr. Ashraf Ghani to resume improved ties between the two nations.
General Musharraf, who came to power in a coup in 1999 was a US ally in the war against terrorism and was widely criticized for his pro US stance, when he decided to cooperate with US forces to fight against militant groups and forces within Pakistan.
Presently the former President lives in Karachi under death threats from the Taliban and is also facing legal complications regarding his rule from 1999 to 2008.
