PTI Activists turn to Lahore after Faisalabad and Karachi
Monday, December 15th, 2014 11:36:01 by Hunain NaseerAfter Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s protests shut down Faisalabad and Karachi, the party has now turned towards Lahore, following up on the chairman Imran Khan’s call for a country wide shut down under his ‘Plan C’.
According to reports from Lahore, PTI activists have blocked major roads and are burning tyres in areas including Liberty, Bhutta and Town Hall chowks and the Mall Road.
While private educational institutions are mostly closed today, government schools and institutions remain open, causing difficult for students. PTI workers are also stating that any shops which are closed have been done so voluntarily and there was no pressure or use of force to enforce a shutdown.
While the protest in Faisalabad last week saw one PTI worker losing his life and several getting injured due to clashes, the Karachi protest did not witness violence. However the FPCCI (Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry) reported that the Karachi shutdown caused losses of around Rs. 65 billion.
Despite the government’s direction to PML-N workers to avoid any protests or responses, activists have taken to some roads, reportedly chanting slogans against the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.
Information Minister Pervez Rasheed commented on the situation as well, expressing his disappointment and alleging the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers of forcing people to become a part of their protest and preventing them from going to their offices.
