Missing AirAsia Flight could be on the Sea Floor after Having Crashed
Tuesday, December 30th, 2014 11:34:20 by Hunain NaseerThe AirAsia flight which went missing last Sunday and sent Indonesian authorities searching for over 2 days, is believed to have crashed and reached the sea floor.
The flight, which was carrying 162 people disappeared over the Java Sea about five minutes after the flight crew requested a change in altitude to avoid rough clouds.
The request however was not approved due to other flights in the area, and it is presumed that the plane crashed shortly afterwards and sank to the bottom of the sea.
The plane, which was an Airbus A320-200, took off from Indonesia and was headed to Singapore as flight QZ8501.
“Based on our coordinates, we expect it is in the sea, so for now (we think) it is on the sea floor,” said an Indonesian official in charge of the search and rescue operations.
According to the Indonesian civil aviation, the flight’s radar data was in their possession, but they were waiting for the search and rescue teams to locate the debris first.
The search for the missing plane is focused on an area about 70 square nautical miles and the sea there is believed to be only about 100 metres deep at most, which significantly increases the chances of the plane being found.
