Saudi Arabia Refutes Allegations of Funding Extremism in Pakistan
Monday, February 9th, 2015 4:49:03 by Hunain NaseerThe Saudi embassy has issues a press statement denying claims that Saudi Arabia is involved in funding and hence supporting the extremist mindset in Pakistan.
The statement came after the Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination, Riaz Hussain Pirzada alleged that the Saudi government played a role in the Muslim World’s instability by funding religious seminaries which promote extremist.
“A section of the media has been propagating a false impression that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is funding the extremist mindset in Pakistan through its financial support for religious seminaries,” the press statement read.
“Whenever any seminary, mosque or charity organisations request the kingdom for financial assistance, the embassy refers the matter to the Government of Pakistan through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for examining suitability of the applicant,” the statement continued.
The embassy clarified that no assistance or funding is released before the ministry of foreign affairs approves requests, and there are no sectarian considerations involved in such decisions.
The allegations from Mr. Pirzada were accompanied by accusations by Minister of State for Interior Baligur Rehman, who stated during a Senate session last month that several Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, were funding religious seminaries in Pakistan.
These allegations were made on the basis of a report compiled by provincial Inspector Generals, who observed that over 20 seminaries in Pakistan were getting aid from foreign countries.
