Aziz Responds to Opposition Calls for a Clear Stance on the Saudi-Iran Situation
Tuesday, January 5th, 2016 4:32:35 by modousarrIn a policy statement read before the National Assembly, Foreign Affairs advisor to the Prime Minister, Sartaj Aziz said Pakistan is concerned about the recent break-down of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Aziz said the Muslim world faces grave dangers in the situation that has arisen in the wake of the Saudi-Iran conflict he added he is concerned about the possibility of terrorists taking advantage of the situation.
Opposition parties have criticized the government for not having a clear-cut policy when it comes to the situation between Tehran and Riyadh and called for a parliamentary briefing on the issue. According to Aziz an in-camera briefing will be given to the national assembly. Also he added that national interest will drive Pakistan’s approach to the Iran-Saudi situation.
Aziz also said in his statement that Pakistan will continue to advocate for a peaceful resolution of disputes between Saudi Arabia and Iran stressing the need for unity among Muslim countries.
Pakistan has condemned the recent mob attacks on Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran which prompted a diplomatic rift between Iran and Arab states.
Bahrain and Sudan have cut ties with Iran and the Saudi government will also halt air traffic and commercial relations with Iran.
Foreign officer spokesman Qazi Kalilullah refrained to comment on rumors and speculations that Pakistan would follow suit and downgrade relations with Tehran.
Pakistan is an economic and military ally of Saudi Arabia both being predominantly Sunni Muslim countries.
