Tuesday, February 23rd, 2016 9:42:32 by modousarrOn Monday, the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made a pledge that the Pakistani government would construct laws that would eliminate “evil” Honour Killings during a meeting with the renowned social activist and director Shameen Obaid-Chinoy as he congratulated her on her Oscar nomination for a disturbing and vivid documentary on the practice.
“Social evils can be fought through an effective partnership between government and civil society,” the prime minister said.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif labelled the honour killings a ‘critical issue’ and affirmed that his government is resolute in taking measures to ‘remove this stain from society’.
Sharif went on to say, “Women are the most essential section of society and I believe in their empowerment, protection, and emancipation for a prosperous and vibrant Pakistan.”
He included that horrendous customs and practices like honour killings have nothing to do with the divine ethics of Islam. “Islam is the first religion to recognise women’s rights,” he said. “Social reforms introduced by Islam altered the course of history for all times to come.”
Ms. Chinoy commended the Prime Minister for engaging in a primary role to tackle the matter of honour killings and expressed gratitude for his support on her goals to exterminate this practice in her beloved country.
The Prime Minister wished the well-known filmmaker triumph in the pursuit of Academy Awards for her movie on honour killings “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” which was premiered on February 22 at the prime minister’s office.
Social activist Ms. Chinoy was pleased about the role Maryam Nawaz played in aiding the government in achieving its goals in the educational sector who also graced the meeting alongside Special Assistant to the PM Tariq Fatemi.
