Following the Indian government’s denial of Pakistani diplomats travelling to Kolkata to watch the March 19th Pakistan v India World T20 standoff, severe protests were launched against the Indian government.

The Indian government’s actions were condemned and described as against diplomatic norms by the Acting Director General of the South Asia desk.

J.P. Singh assured Pakistani officials that their complaints and view about the situation will be heard by the Indian authorities in New Delhi.

17 applications had been filed by diplomats and officials, including the Pakistani High Commissioner in New Delhi, Abdul Basit. However, only one diplomat was permitted to watch the Pakistan-Bangladesh scheduled for Wednesday.

“Even that diplomat was unable to watch the match, as it is not possible to reach Kolkata in such a short time,” said Manzoor Ali Memon, spokesman for Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.

The Pakistan and India match venue was shifted from Dharamsala to Kolkata because of security fears. The Pakistan government sought from Indian authorities, a “public guarantee” before it sent their players for the event.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, the ne following day, gave the Pakistan team assurance of “foolproof security” during its match with India.

The Pakistani team landed in India on Saturday despite the tight security measures and has been booked to participate in the World T20 series. They will go head-to-head with the Indian cricket team, a match that will serve as the one of the most awaited tournament games at the Eden Gardens on March 19.
