The Gulshan-e-Iqbal park was the scene of bloodshed and chaos as many women and children were among the fatalities.
Police confirmed the death toll at 72 with senior police official Haider Ashraf stating that the majority of the victims were Muslims diffusing claims that the attacks were religiously motivated.
233 people were initially reported to have been wounded but the number had risen to more than 300 by Sunday late evening
There has been widespread international condemnation of the attack. The Afghan President Ashraf Ghani expressed his sympathies and described the attacks as cowardly during a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
On his part PM Sharif assured Mr. Ghani that the Zarb-e-Azb military operation will continue until the “scourge of terrorism is eliminated from Pakistan,”
In the meantime, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has demanded a military offensive against terrorists in the Punjab area.
Speaking at one of the hospitals treating wounded victims from the blast, the PTI leader lamented that the government had failed to provide adequate security and must “revisit its priorities”.
Mr. Kahn also called for a depoliticization of the police, which he blames on opportunists that use the police for the political gains.
