“No One Told Me I would Be Interviewed By A Muslim!” An Angry Aung San Suu Kyi Tells BBC Reporter
Tuesday, March 29th, 2016 9:00:51 by modousarrNobel Peace Price laureate Aung San Suu Kyi considered a heroine as a politician in Myanmar who stood up to an iron-fisted dictatorial regime and considered by many as a global icon for a bravery and leadership, caused quite a stir when she muttered anti-Islamic sentiments after an interview with BBC’s Mishal Husain.
Suu Kyi allegedly complained off-air that no one had told her that she would be interviewed by a Muslim.
Her comments came after she faced some tough questions from the BBC presenter about the plight of Muslims in Myanmar who are systematically targeted by the country’s Buddhist majority in what some observers have described as tantamount to ethnic cleansing.
Husain invited Suu Kyi to condemn mob attacks on Myanmar’s Muslim minority, and the leader seemed rather reluctant to do so. She instead tried to suggest that the Buddhist majority lived in fear of the Muslims who are only 4% of the total population in Myanmar.
Her comments seemed to have alarmed even her most devoted fans in the West where she is highly regarded as a symbol of feminine strength and virtuousness.
The BBC presenter involved was born to Pakistani parents in Northhampton. She is the first Muslim presenter of the Today Program on radio 4 and is a mother of three.
