Wednesday, March 30th, 2016 6:22:16 by modousarrHalf a dozen members of the Anjuman Talaba-e-Islam (ATI) were arrested over their supposed involvement in the attack on the Karachi Press Club and for battering journalists on Sunday.
Raids which lead to parts of District South including Saddar and MA Jinnah Road resulted in the arrests. The arrested ATI workers have been identified as Umair Khan, Obaid Ahmed, Muhammad Raza, Khawaja Raza, Abdul Qadir, Irfan and Zafar Iqbal. They have held in custody in the Artillery Maidan police station. Also registered at the station on behalf of the state was an FIR (43/16).
The seven suspects have been charged under sections 147,148,149,379,436,511 and 427 of the Pakista Penal Code that deals with rioting, aerial firing and snatching valuables. Additionally, Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act has been included in the FIR.
“We have also nominated ATI’s Karachi-based leader Iftikhar Ali and a party’s office bearer, Sajid Khan, in the FIR,” said Artillery Maidan SHO Abdul Ghaffar. About 70 to 80 unidentified persons have also been placed in the FIR, Ghaffar saying that “they will also be arrested soon.”
A protest by religious parties to mark the Chehlum of Mumtaz Qadri, the convicted murderer of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer who was hanged last month, led to the bombardment by dozens of ATI members displaying party flags and banners into the press club, thrashing journalists on Sunday.
They further went on to attempt setting fire on a vehicle owned by a private news channel.
