Flood Toll Hits 92 As Rescuers Find 23 In Kohistan Landslide
Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 9:21:50 by modousarrWith the landslide in the northern mountains due to heavy rain, came the death of 92 people, as rescuer, on Wednesday, discovered 23 people buried in the landslide.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa witnessed the most death and destruction from the heavy floods and landslides, with 65 people killed and 929 homes either damaged or totally destroyed, according to government official Abdul Latif.
Latif further mentioned the 23 people who went missing and were later found buried under 40 meters (130 feet) of mud, about 200 km north of the capital, Islamabad in the Kohistan Valley.
Five injured survivors and two bodies had been rescued from the landslide.
The Meteorological Department estimated that the worst of the rain had taken place during the weekend and the forecast for Wednesday was mainly dry weather in the most affected areas. However, roads blocked by landslides may take longer to clear.
“When the road access is cleared, then our teams can go house to house and survey the damage,” Latif said.
Unfortunately, 12 people were found dead in Azad Kashmir and 15 were killed in the far northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan.
