JUI-F Fails To Support PML-N In Ensuring Proposed Law
Tuesday, April 12th, 2016 10:40:25 by modousarrThe anti-honor killing bill intended to be passed in the joint parliament session today had a few opposers including the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). It had faltered in its strides to acquire the support of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl’s with regards to the bill.
The Anti-Honor Killings Laws (Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill of 2015 had initially been brought before the joint session of the parliament. The JUI-F had objected to the bill, arguing that some of the clauses went against Islamic injunctions and demanded a review of the law.
JUI-F sources reported that discussions between JUI-F legal team and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Human Rights, Barrister Zafarullah Khan and Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid had reached a dead end.
The negotiations comprised of two parts- the first took place last week with JUI-F’s legal team and the latter occurred with JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Both discussions resulted in a standstill over a range of issues.
It is supposedly known that JUI-F’s legal team had solicited the government to refrain from altering clauses that have to do with non-compound offences in the legislation.
JUI-F remained persistent in urging the government team to avoid changing the element of reconciliation in the clauses, requesting the PML-N team to depend on the discretion of the judges.
Barrister Zafarullah, on the other hand, appeared impartial in altering the clause which may be the reason for the stalemate.
Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, JUI-F’s Information Secretary reiterated the point that the deadlock still remained.
“We (JUI-F) will not support any bill against Islamic injunctions … the ruling party’s team must show some flexibility,” he said.
