Medical student sets himself on fire after getting barred from exams

The student, identified as Abdul Basit, was in his final year of bachelor’s degree at Hamdard University in Karachi.
The administration of the university refused to let Abdul Basit take his final examination, after he reached the examination hall late. According to Abdul Basit’s family, he had gotten late because his car broke down while he was on his way to the university.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon. According to the details provided, Abdul Basit set doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire after being refused to take the exam. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital with 95 percent burns and the doctors were unable to revive him as her injuries were too severe.
According to the university’s admin officer, Abdul Basit came to the college, asking for the vice chancellor, Dr. Nadeem. At that time, Dr. Nadeem was busy in the OPD, hence Basit left. After a while, the admin officer saw the student on fire while others around him were trying to extinguish it with sand.
Despite what was reported, Abdul Basit’s mother still believes that her son was murdered, as he was not the sort to commit suicide.
“He wanted to be a doctor. He was an educated child. He could not commit suicide. He was killed,” she said.
“I have lived with my brother for 28 years. I know him. He couldn’t commit suicide,” said Basit’s older brother Majid.
The Governor of Sind, Ishrat Ul Ebad has taken notice of this incident and he has asked the police to investigate it and come up with a report.
