New Punjab Legislation bill places restriction on wedding festivities
Thursday, April 14th, 2016 7:26:48 by fatimaarshadThe Punjab Assembly approved amendments to the Marriage Functions Bill, according to which, now there will be restrictions placed on decorating houses during weddings and on lavish wedding spreads. If anyone is found violating these restrictions, there will be jail term to be served and hefty fines to be paid.
Amendments to the bill were approved on Thursday under the section ‘prohibition of ostentations celebrations’. The amendments restricts the citizens of Punjab from celebrating or organizing marriage from ‘decorating any street, road or public park or any place other than the building, with lights or illumination’.
Lavish menus are also prohibited and now people can only serve one dish to their guests. Initially, the ban was only placed on wedding halls and marquees, but now the guests will be served one dish even if the wedding takes place at the family’s residence.
“A person celebrating his marriage or organising the marriage of any other person shall not serve or allow anyone to serve meals or other edibles except one dish to the persons participating in the marriage,” states the bill.
A restriction has also been imposed on using explosives like fireworks on weddings. Use of firearms will also lead to heavy fines.
Families are also restricted to exhibit dowry to the public eye over causing ‘nuisance or disturbance to the neighborhood’.
Violaters of these terms will be imposed fines ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 2,000,000, depending on the degree of violation.
