After the deadline given to the Chhotu Gang expired on Monday, a full scale operation was launched by the army to dislodge the criminals from the area. The operation against the Rajanpur gang has entered its third week and it seems to be nearing its end, now that the army has taken a decisive action to eradicate the criminals.
A small Island in the middle of Indus River in the Rajanpur district, has been a safe haven for criminals led by Ghulam Rasool, alias Chhotu, for a number of years. In the beginning of this month, the police started an operation against the Chhotu gang, termed Zarb-e-Aahan, but the operation was so ill-planned that it backfired and eventually six policemen were killed while 18 others were taken hostage.
Finally, army troops took over the operation on Friday, and their main aim is to recover the captured police officers safely. Members of the gang were given the ultimatum to surrender peacefully or else an operation will be launched against them-they were given the deadline of Monday afternoon to surrender.
After Chhotu gang did not succumb, a full scale operation was launched against them yesterday. Army gunship helicopters pounded the small island and ground operations were also carried out.
“We (army) had given the Chhotu gang until 2pm today to surrender but they did not abide by the deadline,” said a military official based in the district of Rajanpur.
“Now there is no option left but a full-scale operation, which has started.”
So far it’s still not clear that how many criminals are based on that island-however, it is believed that their families are also with them. The safety of the hostages is still not known at this point.
